ANNOUNCEMENT AND CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE TO THE NEW CHIEF MEDICAL DIRECTOR The Management and Staff of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, heartily announce and congratulate Dr. (Mrs.) Maureen Uche Umeakuewulu (JP) on her appointment as the new Chief Medical Director of the Teaching Hospital. Her appointment was graciously approved by the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, and takes effect from Friday, 13th March, 2026. Dr. Umeakuewulu, FWACS, FMCOG, FICS, is a highly accomplished medical professional and a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and the International College of Surgeons. She is a Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with the National Hospital Abuja, where she serves in the Gynaecologic Oncology Unit. She is also an accomplished researcher with numerous publications, particularly in the areas of gynaecologic oncology, women’s well-being, and domestic violence. One of her works received recognition in the John J. Sciarra International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics Prize Paper Award for the best clinical research article from a low- and middle-income country in 2021. She has also served as a reviewer for leading international journals, including the British Medical Journal, BioMed Central journals, and other reputable publications. Beyond her clinical and academic achievements, Dr. Umeakuewulu has distinguished herself through professional leadership and humanitarian service. She currently serves as President of the Association of Catholic Medical and Dental Practitioners of Nigeria (FCT Chapter) and President-Elect of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (FCT Chapter). She is also a Council Member of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Nigeria. As the Founder of the Dona‑Maureen Foundation, she has championed initiatives focused on women’s health, children’s welfare, girls’ education, and empowerment of widows. Through her humanitarian outreach, she has provided free medical care to more than 400 indigenes of Igboukwu and facilitated over 850 free cancer screening tests for women. Dr. Umeakuewulu has received several recognitions for her professional excellence and philanthropic efforts, including the 2021 Woman of the Year Award by the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, North Central Zone, and special recognition as a role model of innovation for her contributions to the success of the MWAN 2019–2021 Biennium. As she assumes office as Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, the hospital community warmly welcomes her and expresses confidence that her wealth of experience, dedication, and visionary leadership will further advance the institution’s mission of delivering quality healthcare, medical training, and research. We sincerely congratulate her on this well-deserved appointment and wish her a successful and impactful tenure.
