CATHOLIC NURSES GUILD, AWKA DIOCESE, MARKS WORLD DAY OF THE SICK AT COOUTH On the 11th of February 2026, members of the Catholic Nurses Guild, Awka Diocese, led by Prof. Henrietta Okedu of Anaedo, President of the Catholic Nurses Guild of Nigeria (Awka Diocese), commemorated the World Day of the Sick with a visit to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) Amaku, Awka. The World Day of the Sick, observed annually on February 11 in the Catholic Church in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes, provides an opportunity to reflect on the Christian duty of care, compassion, and solidarity with the sick. This year’s theme, as presented by the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, “The Compassion of the Samaritan: Loving by Bearing the Pain of Others,” calls on the faithful to embody the selfless love exemplified in the parable of the Good Samaritan. In living out this message, the Guild members visited patients in both the male and female medical wards of COOUTH to empathise with them and offer moral and material support. Among those present were Nurse Ann Okeke, the Secretary of the Guild; Nurse Victoria Obiekezie, who worked and retired from COOUTH; and Ugwu Vivian, the Vice President, who retired as Chief Nursing Officer at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam. Their presence was a practical demonstration of faith in action, bringing comfort, encouragement, and hope to patients while reaffirming the Guild’s commitment to compassionate healthcare rooted in Christian values.
