Dr. Akabuike Commends Awka Union Houston for Donation of 50 Hospital Beds to COOUTH AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE On Friday, January 9, 2026, the Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Hon. Dr. Joe Akabuike, formally received a donation of fifty high-quality hospital beds from the Awka Union Houston, Texas, USA. The handover ceremony was attended by the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, and the Transition Committee Chairman (Mayor) of Awka South, Prince Chinedu Okafor. A Challenge Turned into Contribution During the event, Dr. Akabuike recounted the origin of this intervention. He noted that the initiative began after a member of the Awka Union Houston, who had been a patient at the hospital, shared observations regarding facility standards. In response, the CMD challenged the union to contribute to the hospital’s growth—a practice common in developed healthcare systems globally. Strengthening the Public-Private-Community Partnership (PPCP) Dr. Akabuike emphasized that healthcare development is a collective responsibility. He lauded the "Solution Governor," Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for his extensive interventions at COOUTH and his commitment to the Public-Private-Community Partnership (PPCP) model. "Healthcare development cannot be left to the government alone," Dr. Akabuike stated. "Individuals, corporate bodies, and our brothers and sisters in the diaspora all play vital roles in strengthening our health systems." Commitment to Future Growth Speaking on behalf of the donors, the Chairman of Awka Union Houston Sir Uyanwune assured the management that this donation is merely the beginning of their support. He reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the transformation of COOUTH, noting that investing in the hospital is a direct investment in the wellbeing of Ndi Anambra. He highlighted that such contributions are essential to enhancing the availability, quality, and accessibility of healthcare services across the state.
