DR. AKABUIKE CALLS FOR THOROUGH INVESTIGATION OF EVERY DEATH WHILE SPEAKING TO WOMEN JOURNALISTS.
The Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku, Awka, Hon. Dr. Joe Akabuike, on Wednesday 28th of May, 2025, delivered a lecture to the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) at Godwin Ezemo Press Centre, Awka, on Sudden Death Syndrome .
During the lecture, Dr. Akabuike shed light on some of the underlying causes of sudden death, emphasizing the importance of understanding these factors to prevent such tragedies. He stressed that sudden deaths can occur due to various reasons, including underlying health conditions, genetic predispositions, and environmental factors. He pointed out that diabetic patients can die suddenly not because of an increase in blood sugar level but as a result of sudden decrease in blood sugar levels, which can even happen while asleep after taking the routine medication. He called on diabetic and high blood pressure patients to be conscious of this sudden fall in their blood sugar or pressure level as it can lead to sudden death.
Dr. Akabuike called for thorough investigations into every death as a crucial step towards reducing the incidence of sudden deaths. According to him, by doing so, he discloses that healthcare professionals and families can gain valuable insights into the underlying causes of these tragedies, thereby saving lives ultimately. For him, thorough investigations into every death to determine the cause can help identify potential risks and prevent similar deaths in the future. By understanding the causes of sudden death, individuals and communities can take proactive steps towards mitigating these risks.
